Video: Death Cab For Cutie - “Little Bribes”

Posted by Chris on July 1st, 8:42 pm

Death Cab For Cutie made a fan’s video for “Little Bribes” the official one. It’s not a bad effort and the animation of the words is clever, but it frustrates me a little. It’s like trying to keep up with a foriegn film while flying by a drive-in at 100 miles an hour. Either way, it’s still a great song.

Video: Jay-Z - “D.O.A. (Death Of Autotune)”

Posted by Chris on June 29th, 6:14 pm

The best song of the summer (so far) has a video. Yes, that is Harvey Keitel. LeBron James might have missed the NBA Championship this year, but he gets to mug up as well. Not too shabby.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson

Posted by Chris on June 25th, 9:25 pm

Michael Jackson passed away today at the age of 50.

I know that I’ve been hating on the king of pop lately, arguing that there’s no way he’d make it through all 50 shows he booked in London.

It turns out that I was right, but I honestly did not want to win this way.

Sure, he was great to make fun of in his later years, but you can’t argue the fact that the guy perfected the art of pop music.

Farewell Michael, I’ll try and remember you for the man you were in the 80’s.

Not your parent’s Bob Dylan…

Posted by Chris on June 24th, 6:52 pm

I’ve seen the video for Bob Dylan’s “Beyond Here Lies Nothin” from his latest album several times now. I don’t find much shocking, but an entire video centered around beating up women creeps just about anybody (minus Chris Brown) out.

Dylan’s music in his prime was often shocking because he was tackling major social issues. Considering this, I suppose it makes sense that the video-age proves he’s still shocking. Possibly even more so.

Still, before this premiered, I thought of Dylan as an aging musician who was starting to look and sound more like Skeletor - in the most awesome way possible - everyday. Now, not only do I believe that he is still ballsy…I’m actually a little afraid of him.

Sunny Day Real Estate - A reunion tour worth seeing

Posted by Chris on June 23rd, 7:47 pm

Influential rockers Sunny Day Real Estate have announced a reunion tour. If you live in a cloudy world (get it?) and have never heard them, go out and buy their 1994 album Diary.

At long last, a reunion worth being excited about. Am I the only one that doesn’t care if an ancient AC/DC puts out a mediocre Wal Mart album? I’ve been equally unimpressed with the Blink 182 and No Doubt rehashings that have recently happend as well. (Of course, I’ll probably be eating those words when the two put out new albums that kill.) It’s not that these bands are bad, but they’ve already proved their success. It almost makes a reunion boring.

Meanwhile, Sunny Day has been hailed by critics since their inception, but they remain largely unknown. Often cited as one of the founding emo bands (although they put “modern” emo to shame), Sunny Day’s reunion may earn them the recognition they deserve.

Is it too much to ask for a new record to go along with the tour?

Video: Green Day - “21 Guns”

Posted by Chris on June 22nd, 7:47 pm

Here’s the second video from Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown. “21 Guns” may give you a sinking emo feeling at first, but the video redeems itself when the bullets start flying through the walls. It is certainly a more entertaining song than “Know Your Enemy”, probably because it isn’t three minutes of annoying repetition.

The Rundown: Beck, Fred Durst, Mysterious dead bodies at Bonnaroo

Posted by Chris on June 18th, 7:35 pm

Do you love Beck, but you’re tired of hearing him play his own songs? Good news, now you can hear him tackle other artists’. He’s launching his Record Club project on his official website where he will redo classic albums with the help of MGMT, Devendra Banhart, Jamie Lidell and others. The catch - Beck and friends will record all the tracks to the LP in one day. Prepare for the ultimate test of his musical genius.

Fred Durst has announced that Limp Bizkit’s hiatus was partially due to hating his own fan base. The rap-rocker said that he realized “bullies” that were like the kids that “ruined his life” growing up were using his music as “fuel to torture other people”. That seals the deal. Not only does Durst sound like he’s whining about his lost milk money when he “sings” or “raps”, he’s probably actually reflecting on the moment as well.

While cleaning up after Bonnaroo, Tennesee police discovered the dead body of an Alabama man. The cause of death is still undetermined, but it doesn’t take a professional gambler to bet on an overdose for this one. Hopefully, he didn’t die before Phish and Bruce Springsteen played together. That just seems unjust.

Buy Eddie Van Halen shoes, impress your friends (but probably not)

Posted by Chris on June 17th, 6:46 pm

Eddie Van Halen is suing Nike over a shoe design. No, he really is.

He claims Nike violated his copyright by using his trademarked red, white and black splatter design taken from his guitars on its Dunk Lows sneakers. More importantly, the aging rock star actually owns a shoe company that puts out footwear (right) based on this design.

I have to take Nike’s side on this one. Do you really think they would purposely steal such a hideous design?

Of course, I’m a guy that only wears full-shoes when it’s absolutely required. Maybe I just don’t get the hidden appeal.

I will say one thing - rock a pair of these puppies, and you’re a much braver person than I am. I bet they look shit-throwing crazy cool with a pair of leopard print spandex pants.

Video: Sonic Youth - “Sacred Trickster”

Posted by Chris on June 16th, 8:26 pm

Indie rock icons Sonic Youth revealed the video for ”Sacred Trickster” off their new album The Eternal today. The song’s only two minutes long, serving as a reminder that great tracks don’t always need to be more than five minutes. Plus, it’s pretty fun to watch the three punk chicks in the video ruin a high society event.

Indie band you need to know: Kuroma

Posted by Chris on June 15th, 7:43 pm

Still depressed that you missed Bonnaroo? Well cheer up, the world’s not perfect, but at least I’ve got a new band for you to check out.

Kuroma is the project of Hank Sullivant, a former member of The Whigs and touring guitarist for MGMT. Fans of the latter band will definitely dig Sullivant, as his vocals show the group’s influence on songs like “Searching For A Sheep” and “Alexander Martin”.

While MGMT turns to trippy pop beats for their kicks, Sullivant channels classic rock on Kuroma’s debut album Paris. Kuroma provides you with a taste of Zeppelin on “May Be I’m Lazy” and continues with acid-age Beatles influences on “Heavenly Justice”.  All in all, it’s an impressive combination of the catchy hooks that made MGMT famous and itelligent rock.

Go forth and stream.
